St. John’s was founded on the conviction that medicine must ultimately be an instrument of service. A scholarship makes that mission possible for a deserving student at a defining moment.
For generations, alumni, faculty, families, friends and benefactors have enabled talented students to pursue medicine despite financial hardship. Some scholarships began more than twenty years ago and still carry one generation’s generosity into the next.
A scholarship helps educate one student. That student becomes a physician. And that physician may touch thousands of lives.

Our mission
To enable deserving students from economically disadvantaged backgrounds to pursue medical education and become compassionate healthcare professionals committed to serving society.
The College has long expanded opportunity for Scheduled Caste, Scheduled Tribe, Tribal Christian and other underrepresented students. When graduates return where physicians remain scarce, the impact comes full circle.
Why scholarships matter
St. John’s remains a non-profit, non-capitation institution with one of the lowest tuition structures among private medical colleges. Yet subsidized tuition and associated costs can still overwhelm families of limited means. Some students cannot obtain loans because their families lack required collateral.
A scholarship may be the bridge between earning a place and being able to remain.
A program built by generosity
More than 45 named MBBS scholarships, 15 postgraduate scholarships and additional Allied Health Sciences and Physiotherapy support have been sustained by FOSJ, alumni associations, alumni, donor families, memorial trusts, College management and the CBCI Society for Medical Education.
Only eight named MBBS scholarships provide full tuition. Many older endowments—created when annual fees were below ₹10,000—now generate less than ₹50,000 per year, and some only a few thousand rupees. Their legacy remains powerful; their reach must catch up.
Selecting Students With Care and Purpose
Awards are primarily merit-cum-means. Annual applications document academic performance, attendance, family finances, supporting records and relevant service. Candidates are interviewed by a Scholarship Committee; final recommendations are approved by institutional leadership.
Friends of St. John’s
FOSJ connects North American alumni with the students following in their footsteps. In 2017, FOSJ established an endowment supporting three annual MBBS scholarships of ₹1.5 lakhs each; later alumni fundraising created additional support for unmet need.

The measure is what happens afterward: the physician in a rural clinic, mission hospital, teaching institution or hospital ward; the child diagnosed early; the mother receiving timely care; the student later taught and inspired. The donor may never know their names—but remains part of their story.
The Need Today
Inflation has reduced the value of older endowments while educational expenses have risen. Expanding resources can increase full-tuition support, revitalize older funds, help students unable to obtain loans, widen access for underserved communities and give graduates greater freedom to choose service-oriented careers.

Dr. Anil Rajesh Dungdung Memorial Scholarship
To the Class of 1991, Dr. Anil Rajesh Dungdung—affectionately “Dunga”—was unforgettable: a booming laugh, effortless warmth and generosity that asked for nothing in return.
His sudden passing while serving on a WHO outreach program in Jharkhand left profound grief—and a desire to ensure something of their friend would endure.
They chose to honor Dunga not simply in memory, but in purpose.
