SISTER DOCTORS · CLASS OF 1991

A Mission Beyond the Broken Bridges

Sr. Lenita D’Souza, Class of 1991 — Where Compassion Becomes a Calling

The Story

Some bridges are built of stone and steel. Others are built of compassion, courage, and the conviction that no human being should be beyond the reach of care.

For Sr. Dr. Lenita D’Souza, a Sister Doctor and member of the Class of 1991 at St. John’s Medical College, building such bridges has become her life’s mission.

A gynecologist and member of the Sisters of Maria Bambina, Sr. Lenita has dedicated herself to serving Nepal’s most isolated communities. Her calling began with a simple yet profound aspiration, cherished since her novitiate:

“To be a doctor for everyone, serving the poorest in the most remote villages.”

Since 2024, she has traveled Nepal’s mountainous terrain in a mobile medical clinic, bringing essential healthcare to villages where medical facilities are scarce or nonexistent. Her ministry reaches beyond treating illness; it restores dignity, offers reassurance, and reminds forgotten communities that their lives matter.

When devastating floods swept through Nepal, destroying homes, roads, and bridges, Sr. Lenita refused to let the devastation become another barrier to care.

Accompanied by three nurses, a driver, and a government health official, she undertook a perilous sixteen-hour journey through mud and debris to reach flood-stricken communities in Rasuwa. Where other vehicles turned back, her team pressed forward.

In Uttargaya, she encountered families who had lost their homes, livelihoods, and nearly everything familiar. She brought essential medical supplies, made possible through a donor’s generosity. But she also offered something immeasurable: the comfort of being heard, the reassurance of human presence, and the knowledge that they had not been abandoned.

An elderly woman, overwhelmed by loss, took Sr. Lenita’s hand and thanked her for risking the journey to reach them.

The physical bridges had been broken, but a bridge of compassion had been restored.

“Medicine heals the body, but compassion heals the heart,” Sr. Lenita reflects.

A Legacy of Service, An Opportunity to Give

Sr. Lenita’s life beautifully embodies the enduring spirit of St. John’s Medical College, where medical education is rooted not only in academic excellence but also in a profound responsibility to serve humanity.

It is this extraordinary spirit of service that inspired the Class of 1991 to establish the Seva Scholarship—a tribute to the remarkable dedication and selfless work of the Sister Doctors of their class, exemplified by Sr. Dr. Lenita D’Souza. Through this scholarship, the Class of 1991 honors not only their classmates’ lives of service but also the values of compassion, sacrifice, and commitment to the underserved that define St. John’s legacy.

Her work reminds us that the impact of educating one compassionate physician can extend far beyond the walls of a medical college, reaching communities and generations we may never know.

This is the promise of the scholarships supported by Friends of St. John’s.

A scholarship is more than financial assistance. It is an act of faith in human potential, opening the doors of medical education to deserving students whose aspirations may otherwise remain beyond their reach.

The generosity that enables one student to become a physician may someday bring healing to a remote village, comfort to a grieving family, or hope to a child facing an uncertain future.

Sr. Lenita’s journey reminds us that the most enduring bridges are built when opportunity is transformed into service.

Through your support of FOSJ scholarships, you can help build those bridges—empowering future physicians to carry St. John’s legacy of compassion into the places where it is needed most.

For sometimes, the most extraordinary journey of healing begins with a single act of generosity.
