There are many ways to give back to an institution that helped shape one’s life. For Dr. Kevin Pereira, an alumnus of St. John’s Medical College, giving back has been neither a single gesture nor an occasional act of generosity. It has been a sustained, deeply personal commitment—one built over decades through mentorship, professional collaboration, philanthropy, and an enduring desire to strengthen the institution that laid the foundation for his medical career.

His contributions have unfolded quietly, without fanfare or a desire for recognition. Guided by conviction and a keen understanding of what institutions truly need to flourish, Dr. Pereira has demonstrated how one alumnus, working thoughtfully and persistently with faculty and institutional leadership, can make a lasting difference.

From St. John’s to a Distinguished Career in Otolaryngology

A graduate of St. John’s Medical College, Dr. Pereira pursued postgraduate training in Otorhinolaryngology in India and the United Kingdom, followed by a fellowship in Pediatric Otolaryngology at Le Bonheur Children’s Medical Center in Memphis, Tennessee.

He holds professional certifications from the Board of Examiners in India, the Royal College of Surgeons of England, and the American Board of Otolaryngology.

His career has encompassed clinical practice, academic medicine, research, and medical education, including seven years as Residency Program Director in the Department of Otolaryngology at the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston.

Yet, as his professional accomplishments grew, so did his commitment to sharing the knowledge, experience, and opportunities he had acquired with the next generation of physicians at St. John’s.

A Commitment Built on Relationships and Purpose

Dr. Pereira’s approach to supporting St. John’s has been guided by a remarkably simple philosophy: return to your alma mater, build meaningful relationships, listen to those doing the work, identify genuine needs, and help turn promising ideas into reality.

Over the years, his visits to St. John’s have included lectures, teaching rounds, and discussions of complex pediatric cases, including those involving critically ill children in intensive care units. These encounters have fostered enduring relationships with faculty and residents, allowing him to understand the department’s evolving priorities and identify opportunities where his expertise and resources could have the greatest impact.

His involvement has extended well beyond his visits. Through virtual consultations, correspondence, shared surgical videos, research literature, and practical guidance on equipment and treatment approaches, he has remained an accessible mentor and collaborator.

It is this continuity of engagement—rather than any single contribution—that distinguishes his work.

Turning Identified Needs into Lasting Opportunities

Over more than two decades, Dr. Pereira has supported a range of initiatives within the Department of ENT, each responding to a specific educational, clinical, or institutional need.

2004–2007 | Strengthening Clinical Capabilities

His early contributions included $2,500 toward endoscopic equipment in 2004, followed by support for upgrading audiology and vestibular facilities in 2007, during Dr. R. C. Nayar’s tenure as department chair.

2012 | Advancing Pediatric Research

Dr. Pereira served as an advisor and mentor for an Indian Council of Medical Research-funded project investigating predictors of surgical benefit in children with mild obstructive sleep apnea, with Dr. Soumya M. S. as principal investigator.

2017 | Investing in Young Physicians

Recognizing the importance of academic exposure, he contributed $5,000 toward a resident travel grant during Dr. Ophelia D’Souza’s tenure as department chair, helping create opportunities for trainees to participate in professional and scientific activities.

Alongside Dr. Amal Isaiah, he has also provided guidance in abstract preparation and scientific writing, encouraging young physicians to develop their research and scholarly communication skills.

2025 | Building Bridges Across Institutions

Working with Dr. Ramesh and the ENT faculty at St. John’s, Dr. Pereira helped establish an academic connection between St. John’s Medical College and the University of Maryland School of Medicine’s Department of Otolaryngology.

This collaboration has facilitated grand rounds, didactic lectures, and professional exchanges across continents, expanding opportunities for shared learning and academic engagement.

2026 | Establishing a Division of Pediatric Otolaryngology

A particularly significant milestone came in 2026, with Dr. Pereira’s $22,000 contribution toward establishing a Division of Pediatric Otolaryngology at St. John’s, working in collaboration with departmental leadership under Dr. Ramesh.

This initiative represents more than a financial contribution. It is an investment in specialized clinical expertise, the education of future physicians, and the continued development of pediatric ENT services at St. John’s.

Beyond Financial Support

Dr. Pereira’s generosity has never been confined to funding alone.

He has donated copies of four textbooks he edited or co-edited, including the five-volume Encyclopedia of Otolaryngology–Head & Neck Surgery, for which he served as editor of the pediatric otolaryngology section. These resources are housed in the St. John’s main library.

He has also explored additional opportunities to strengthen surgical training, including a proposed temporal bone dissection laboratory that was subsequently funded by another Johnite.

Today, his engagement continues through discussions on strengthening the structure of ENT residency training, including the proposed establishment of the department’s first designated Residency Program Director. Drawing on his own seven years of experience in this role, he brings practical insight into developing a more structured and sustainable educational framework.

A collaborative manuscript between St. John’s and the University of Maryland on otological manifestations of Sjögren’s syndrome in children is also in preparation—another reflection of the academic relationships he has helped cultivate.

A Simple Philosophy with Far-Reaching Impact

What makes Dr. Pereira’s example especially compelling is that his approach is neither complicated nor beyond the reach of other alumni.

His guiding principles offer a practical roadmap:

Return and reconnect. Visit St. John’s and renew relationships with departments and faculty whose work aligns with your professional interests.

Listen and understand. Identify committed faculty leaders and engage them in thoughtful conversations about their priorities.

Distinguish needs from wants. Focus on genuine gaps where additional expertise, resources, or opportunities can make a meaningful difference.

Collaborate with institutional leadership. Develop initiatives that align with departmental goals and can be sustained over time.

Commit to making them happen. Contribute funding, knowledge, mentorship, professional connections, or other resources—and remain engaged as the work progresses.

These principles have shaped Dr. Pereira’s contributions across successive generations of ENT leadership. His support has evolved with the department’s needs, from essential clinical equipment to research mentorship, resident education, international collaboration, and the development of specialized pediatric services.

Some initiatives were supported through Friends of St. John’s, while others were funded directly. What has remained constant is his willingness to translate concern into action and personal conviction into institutional progress.

Strengthening St. John’s: One Meaningful Initiative at a Time

Dr. Kevin Pereira’s story is a reminder that the most enduring contributions to an alma mater are not always the most visible. Often, they emerge from years of quiet commitment, relationships built on trust, and the determination to make something better than one found it.

His example also carries an invitation.

Every Johnite has a unique connection to St. John’s—and perhaps a cause, a department, or an area of medical education that resonates deeply with them. For some, it may be a scholarship that opens doors for a deserving student. For others, it may be a clinical program, research initiative, educational resource, or opportunity to connect St. John’s with expertise elsewhere in the world.

Not every meaningful project begins with a large gift. Many begin with a conversation, an identified need, and the willingness to take the first step.

Through Friends of St. John’s (FOSJ), alumni and well-wishers can help transform these aspirations into tangible initiatives. As a U.S. 501(c)(3) charitable organization, FOSJ provides a pathway for eligible tax-deductible contributions to support projects that advance the mission of St. John’s.

Dr. Pereira has shown what is possible when gratitude finds expression in purposeful action—and when generosity is sustained by personal involvement.

His legacy is not simply in what he has given, but in what his giving has made possible.
