We are sure that you remember that the quest for US residency is a long and arduous one, tinged with uncertainty at every step. With increasing levels of competition from the best and brightest from all over the world, this quest is just getting tougher. Most Johnites can perform well in the USMLE, but exam scores are only one factor (albeit an important one) based on which one’s application is considered, and a candidate is invited for an interview. Applicants today try to gain an edge over the competition by doing externships, observerships and/or research fellowships in the USA prior to applying for the Match. This gives them opportunities for networking and helps them get good letters of recommendation, which can help tip the balance in their favor. In addition, applicants tap into their network of contacts to try and get recommended for residency interviews.

The Chair of ECJI will serve as the designated contact person for students and junior alumni from St. John’s who are interested in pursuing a medical career in the US. The Chair will also help disseminate the information regarding a prospective candidate on the various communication platforms of the SJMCAANA chapter, and the candidate will be notified if there is any alumnus offering to help with the specific needs requested.
