Dr. K. Ramachandra Reddy: A Legacy of Generosity, A Future of Possibility

Honoring a pioneering Johnite whose vision and enduring devotion to his alma mater have opened the doors of medical education to a deserving student.

Adapted from a tribute by Dr. Peter Noronha, fellow member of the pioneering Class of 1964, honoring his longtime friend and classmate, Dr. K. Ramachandra Reddy.

The Story

For Dr. K. Ramachandra Reddy, affectionately known as “Ram,” the bond with St. John’s Medical College has endured far beyond his student years. It is a lifelong relationship rooted in friendship, gratitude, and a steadfast commitment to the institution that helped shape his future.

A member of the pioneering Class of 1964, Dr. Reddy belongs to a remarkable generation of Johnites who helped establish the traditions and spirit of a young medical college. Remembered by his classmates for his keen intellect, thoughtful judgment, and gracious demeanor, he played an active role in student life, serving on the Students’ Association in 1966–67.

Following graduation, he was among the earliest St. John’s alumni to pursue postgraduate training in the United States. After an internship at MacNeal Memorial Hospital in Illinois, he completed his radiology residency at Indiana University School of Medicine and went on to a distinguished career spanning approximately 35 years in Indianapolis.

His influence, however, extended well beyond his professional achievements. As successive generations of Johnites arrived in the United States, Ram became a trusted mentor, helping younger graduates navigate residency opportunities and establish their careers. For many, he was not only an invaluable resource but also a reassuring friend and guide.

Throughout the decades, Dr. Reddy has remained deeply connected to St. John’s and its alumni community. A devoted participant in class reunions and alumni gatherings, he has consistently championed the friendships and shared values that define the Johnite experience.

He has also long believed that the opportunities afforded by a St. John’s education carry a responsibility to help create similar opportunities for others.

At alumni gatherings, Ram frequently encouraged his fellow graduates to consider how they might collectively support their alma mater. His own response to that call would become a remarkable example of philanthropy in action.

An Extraordinary Gift: A Scholarship Funded in Its Entirety

Dr. Reddy personally contributed the entire endowment corpus required to establish a full undergraduate medical scholarship at St. John’s Medical College.

Unlike other fully funded scholarships established through contributions matched by Friends of St. John’s (FOSJ), the Dr. K. Ramachandra Reddy Scholarship was endowed entirely through his personal contribution, without the need for matching funds.

This exceptional commitment reflects both his belief in the transformative power of education and his determination to make a lasting difference.

By funding the complete endowment, Dr. Reddy has created a sustainable source of support for a deserving medical student, extending the impact of his gift well beyond a single academic year.

For a student whose aspirations might otherwise be constrained by financial circumstances, the scholarship represents far more than tuition assistance. It offers the freedom to pursue a medical education with greater security, the confidence to look beyond financial limitations, and the opportunity to build a future dedicated to healing and service.

In a singular act of philanthropy, Dr. Reddy has transformed his own professional success into an enduring opportunity for another aspiring physician.

Together with his wife, Dr. Shailaja Rao, an accomplished radiation oncologist, Ram has supported numerous charitable causes in India and the United States. Their shared commitment to education, medicine, and service reflects values that have guided their family across generations.

Their children, Sanjay and Anita, have also pursued careers in the medical field, continuing a family tradition rooted in healing and service.

Those who know Ram describe him as the consummate gentleman—intellectually gifted, unfailingly gracious, and deeply committed to the people and institutions that have shaped his life.

His service on the Scholarship Committee of Friends of St. John’s (FOSJ) further reflects his dedication to expanding educational opportunities for future generations of Johnites.

Honoring a Remarkable Johnite

Friends of St. John’s celebrates Dr. K. Ramachandra Reddy for his exceptional contribution to medical education and for a lifetime of mentorship, friendship, leadership, and unwavering loyalty to his alma mater.

His example reminds us that the true measure of professional success lies not only in what we accomplish, but also in the opportunities we create for those who follow.

Through his fully endowed scholarship, Dr. Reddy has given a deserving student more than the means to pursue a medical education. He has offered the possibility of a future whose impact will extend to countless patients, families, and communities.

May his example inspire fellow Johnites to reflect on the causes closest to their hearts and the lasting difference they, too, might make.
